A Secret Was Kept …
ADP Julie Baglama
A year ago our Cabinet decided to ask all Lioness Clubs to nominate at least one of their Lioness for a district wide Knight of Sight Award. The nomination had to include an essay on why that Lioness was deserving of the honor. We decided it would be presented at our District Convention in March and if at all possible it would be kept a secret.

Eight of our clubs participated. The difficult task then of choosing the "finalist" was given to PDPs My Babcock and Carolyn Tiber and IPADP Tammy Rockenbach ( I was so glad I was not on this committee!).

So they pondered the entries and eventually chose Cuba City Lioness Mary Ellen Birkett. And she was registered for the convention so no need to tell her or anyone else who it was. The presentation was going to be immediately after our Opening Ceremony.

Early Saturday morning my committee came to me chagrined since Ellen was not in attendance yet. The Opening Ceremony started and I watched my committee's faces as they watched for her to come in the room (I still did not know who it was). But alas, she did not arrive in time and I had to announce to all that our award would have to wait for another time-and that our committee could be trusted with a secret!

The committee then had to contact her husband, Lion Paul, to let him in on the secret. He said a family dilemma had come up and being the typical giving person Mary Ellen is, she chose to not attend the convention but to care for a grandson. Upon hearing of the honor, he was able to arrange for her to come to our business meeting in the afternoon.

She then was presented with the Knight of Sight Award at our Lioness meeting with her family (including her grandson) watching. Congratulations Lioness Mary Ellen Birkett!

The 2010 State Lions Curling Bonspiel was held in Medford over the weekend of January 8th. Although Sun Prairie didn't bring home any "Gold" this year a great time was had by all involved. Lion Terry Pederson did the best job for Sun Prairie by getting his team to the medal round and finishing tied for Third in the Second Event. Great effort! Next year in Galesville promises to be just as much fun and then back to McFarland for 2012 which is a very nice venue.

AVOCA-BLUE RIVER-MUSCODA LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES 44 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
Riverdale Leo Club receives charter, members inducted
MUSCODA.....The Avoca-Blue River-Muscoda Lion Club celebrated charter night on April 12th as a crowd of 70 filled the Kratochwill Memorial Building for a delicious meal and eventful program. The club honored charter members Lee Baumann and Julie Ward for 44 years of continuous service to the Lions Club. A necrology service memorialized Lion Stan Patch who was a member of the local club for over 40 years and had achieved the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Lion, the Melvin Jones Award.

The evening was made even more special by the establishment of a new service organization at Riverdale High School, the Leo Club, an offshoot of the Lions. The Riverdale Leo Club received their charter and the inaugural members were inducted by District Governor Rick Daluge. Also in attendance was Neil Winchell, former Principal at Riverdale High School and a former President of the Lions Club who is now a Lions Vice District Governor for this area.

Lions President Mary Stanek thanked those in attendance for their service to the community and commended Lion Chris Simonson for serving as advisor to the new Leo Club. Stanek also recognized Lion Bucky Boland from Iowa Grant High School for his assistance in starting up the new Leo Club at Riverdale.

Stanek said, "I am very proud of our new Leo Club at Riverdale. This fine group of young people are ready, willing and able to assume the motto of Lions International, which is 'We Serve'. I look forward to seeing the projects you will work on and the differences you will make in our community. "

The local Lions Club supports a myriad of worthy causes include the following: purchase of eyeglasses and hearing aids for persons with financial needs; vision screenings for area schoolchildren; diabetes awareness programming; scholarships for Riverdale graduating seniors; the annual National Honor Society banquet; donations to the food pantry; distribution of Christmas food baskets; donations to fire and EMS departments, schools and parks, Wisconsin Lions Camp, Eyebank, Mission to Mexico, and the list goes on and on.

The Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. During the summer months, the meetings are held at Victora Riverside Park. For further information on the local Lions Club, contact Mary Stanek at 739-3365 or speak with any of the Lions Club members.

Pastor Dieter, pastor of the Lancaster Congregational Church, is also a chaplain in the Navy Reserves. He left Lancaster April 10 for training in Mississippi, prior to his deployment to Afghanistan. When asked by LCC member Carol Terwilliger what the community could do for him, Chaplain Dieter told of the necessity for phone cards for the service men and women he sees. With a $20 phone card, the soldiers are able to call home for 78 minutes. Buying the cards in bulk is less costly, with the charge for 25 cards being $375, plus $14.95 shipping and handling. Wanting to have as many cards as possible available for Chaplain Dieter prior to his deployment in June, Terwilliger has discussed the need for the phone cards with many people in the community. The Lancaster Lions Club has purchased 25 cards, as have both the Lancaster Chapter of PEO and the Lancaster Congregational Church. Terwilliger hopes to continue to raise additional funds to continue to purchase phone cards throughout Chaplain Dieter's deployment. If you have questions or would like to make a donation toward this very worthy cause, please contact Carol Terwilliger at (608) 723-7322 or (608) 778-7699.

The results are in for the Environmental Photo Contest and it was a clean swipe at both the district and the state contest for the Token Creek Lions Club. The contest winners in the five categories were:
* Animal Life - L. Dennis Sommer (deer)
* Landscape - L. Nellie Vallerta-Asst ( waterfall)
* Plant Life - L. Barb Hennings (water lily)
* Weather Phenomenon - L. Ben August (water fall)
* Lions Environment Miracle Workers - L. Nellie Vallerta-Asst (Salvation Army volunteer)

The district contest and the state contest were judged by different panels of Past District Governors. At the state contest, it was determined that L. Nellie's photograph of the water lily was the over-all winner. These photos were then forwarded to the Lions Clubs International contest where judging will be by the attendees at the International Convention in Sydney, Australia. Winners at the Convention will be published in the 2011 Environmental wall calendar. Copies of these photos were also on display at our District Convention in Dubuque.

Every Lion was eligible to submit a photograph of his or her immediate surroundings into a club-level Environmental Photo Contest. The purpose of the photo contest is to showcase the beauty of nature. In 1972, Lions Clubs International made a commitment to protect the environment and the photo contest is an outgrowth of this mission.

Wow!! Magic Seeds! Magic Pumpkins! What Excitement!

Lions and Magic in the classroomOn October 19, 2009 the Highland Lions Club visited with the Highland Elementary School's First Graders. The Highland Lions talked about What we do as Lion Members and what fun we were going to have with this special class of first graders. We talked about the vision screening which was done on October 13, 2009, and that this was another way that Lions help young students.

We then went out to their butterfly garden and gave each student a magic seed. These students went right to work and planted their seed. They were really excited to know that in three days, they would find their surprise.

On Wednesday, the Lions were there at 7:00 a.m. and planted these pumpkins in the place where the seeds once were. The Lions were again invited back into the classroom. We went over the planting of seeds on Monday, and for the students who were not there on Monday, we explained that seeds were planted for them. Excitement was all around the classroom as Mrs. Rusch opened the blinds. Students were ecstatic upon seeing the large pumpkin patch. We then went outside to claim these pumpkins. Some of the comments from the students were "I know my pumpkin has magic seeds inside." "I have the biggest one." "It's too heavy."

I am not sure who had more fun -- the students or the Lions!

This idea was taken from the Lion Magazine which came in March 2009. This was indeed a wonderful way to introduce Lions into the classroom. Not only do we do service to the community, but we have fun in doing it.

All of our pumpkins were donated by Peck's Market in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Mr. Dick Peck was very happy to help our Lions Club and bring some happiness into the lives of our First Graders.

The McFarland Lioness and Lions are hosting and have organized a BIG community wide Food Drive for the McFarland food pantry! We want to feed McFarland!

The food drive is Friday, October 23 from 12 noon - 6pm and Saturday 7 am - 12 noon at the Pick N' Save in McFarland.

We will be asking customers as they walk in to consider buying some much needed items for the food pantry. We will be giving them a list and items will also be on special. Then they will drop those items back off to us in shopping carts - where one of our volunteers will wheel it over to the truck that was donated by Lioness Michelle and the someone will sort the items - and then they will be taken to the Pantry and hopefully FILL up the shelves!

You can contact Deb Denure for further information at (608) 838-1145 or deb@dbawi.com.

TTT Training - Transfusion. Transition. Transformation.
Oct. 18 - 10am - 5pm - Amcore Bank,. Mt Horeb
by Jodi Burmester, 27-D1 MERLOW Team Co-Chair
Many of our clubs are in crisis. We are struggling to attract new members and keep our current ones. The TTT program is a nine part, modular program designed to address each club's individual needs. Modules include:
• Recruitment
• Involvement
• Retention
• New Clubs
• Meeting Management
• Orientation
• Public Relations
• Induction
• Recognition

A number of our members were introduced to this program at last March's District Convention and excited about its potential to make a difference in their clubs.

This training is designed for Club Membership Chairs and other Lions leaders interested in making their clubs stronger. Attendees will leave fully trained and prepared to implement the modules in their clubs. They will also receive printed and electronic training materials necessary to roll the program out locally.

The program costs $15/attendee and includes lunch and materials. Registration is limited to the first 15 registrants with a cutoff of October 15th. Registration forms have been sent to all club presidents and secretaries with email addresses and are available online at www.md27d1.org or by contacting Jodi Burmester at (608) 271-4473 or jodi.burmester@gmail.com.

27-D1 Receives LCI PR Grant
by Jodi Burmester, 27-D1 PR Chair
27-D1's application for a LCI PR Matching Grant has been approved!

That means we will be running an image building advertising campaign on WTDY - 1670 and Magic 98 from October 12 - November 20, 2009 and again for another six weeks next spring.

During the six weeks of the fall campaign WTDY's Sly in the Morning (6am-10am) and Magic 98's Jim McGaw (3pm-7pm) will run a series of live/taped endorsements highlighting a different Lions project each week.
• 10/12 - Lions Answer the Call to Service
• 10/19 - Used Eyeglass Collection
• 10/26 - LEBW Cornea Express
• 11/2 - Diabetes Awareness
• 11/9 - Children's Vision Screening
• 11/16 - Lions Camp

All spots will drive listeners to a new www.lions-serve.org web address that will focus on:
• Lions in Action through their projects/fundraisers
• Cub meeting/contact info
• All the current info housed here at www.md27d1.org
• We will also be launching a district telephone number for those looking for more information.

For this campaign to be successful, we are encouraging your clubs to gear up in the following ways:
• Send press releases to local media re: local tie-ins to the highlighted programs. For example, sending a release on promoting your used eyeglass collection locations and how we distribute them.
• Make sure all club brochures and web sites are current.
• Submit photos of Lions in Action with write-ups to
pr@md27d1.org
• Submit photos of Lions in Action to your local media with an invitation to the community to join you in your next project.
• Be prepared to talk to potential members about the highlighted projects and your club.
• Contact PR Chair Jodi for assistance at (608) 271-4473 or jodi.burmester@gmail.com.

If all goes according to plan, this campaign will build the general public's awareness for Lions and the good we do; which in turn should increase participation in our projects and fundraisers and hopefully increase our membership.

How Does 27-D1 Rank?
by DG Rick Daluge
I am often asked how we compare to other Districts in various aspects of giving to Lions programs and projects. Here is the ranking for the 2008-09 27-D1 Lions Clubs' yearly giving…
•. Leader Dog Donations- 6th out of 10 with $11,497. 27-A1 ranked first with $41,915.
•. Lions Eye Bank - 2nd out of 10 with $26,625…27-A2 ranked first with $35,775
•. LCI - 4th out of 10 with $32,931…27-A1 ranked first with $57,015.
•. WLF Annual Donations - 7th out of 10 with $52,672…down 20% from last year
•. Total WLF Donations - 6th out of 10 with $75,130
•. Pride Donations - 3rd of 10…24 of 55 clubs have donated
•. Membership - 2nd of 10 - 2,273 members in the district
•. Women Lions Members - 4th out of 10 with 16%

The question each club must ask themselves is/are we doing all that we can to support the programs above? I also often get asked what is the appropriate balance between local contributions and the above listed Lions projects and programs. Usually clubs try to use 50% of their funds for the Lions projects listed, and the other 50% for local types of support such as scholarships, youth groups, school support, or other civic activities. Of course this is always up to the club.
